Your wood floor has the same classic beauty whether you choose solid or engineered wood planks. Oak is the most popular wood species. Red and white oak is available, and both types come in a wide variety of colors. When comparing wood species, consider the grain pattern as well as color. Designs vary from straight to spiral. You can find many attractive hardwood brands at Carlson's Floors in West Chicago, Illinois. Our locally-owned hardwood flooring company offers the highest quality wood floor coverings.
Engineered vs. Solid
'Engineered' is not synonymous with 'inferior!' In fact, you can install engineered wood in more home areas than solid wood planks. This human-made flooring is composed of a plywood base that is topped by a layer of hardwood. More specifically, the base is made up of several layers of plywood that are situated in different directions. Because of this composition, the base tolerates moisture. Thus, unlike solid hardwood flooring, engineered wood can be installed on top of cement and in basements and other moisture-prone areas.
Solid and human-made wood flooring differs in how it is installed. Engineered wood is designed for floating floor construction, while solid hardwood planks are nailed to a wood subfloor. The edges of engineered wood flooring click and lock together, so the floor needs no attachment to the subfloor. Underlayment is placed beneath the planks to enhance the subfloor and performance of the floor. A moisture barrier is attached to some underlayment brands.
