Layers and textures

The impact that texture can bring to your home should not be underestimated. While a flat looking room with smooth lines may have been popular in the past, it?s safe to say that look has gone out of style. A room is truly not complete without a little texture.

Fabrics and textiles are the easiest way to add texture to your home. You can get pillows, blankets, and rugs in many different fabrics and they are a great starting point for implementing character and texture to your space. Try adding a knitted throw, canvas rug, or a leather pillow to your living room?s d?cor.

A more innovative way of adding texture is through wallpaper and backsplashes. There are plenty of wallpaper options that have a subtle raised pattern to them. Backsplashes typically have texture, so the only obstacle is choosing the right one for your home. You can go with your typical subway tile, or geometric shapes and patterns. You also have flexibility with what material is used in your backsplash. Brick, cement, glass, wood, and metal are all well-liked options.

The next step is layering textures. For this, you?ll want to start with a larger piece and add in smaller decorative pieces. Make your backsplash the main point of your kitchen, and add in some textured lights, vases, or kitchen utensils. In the living room below, a velvet couch is used as the primary piece and fuzzy pillows are there to fill in the spaces.

Mixing textures is desirable, as it aligns with the mix and match patterns and maximalist trends that are popular right now. However, you don?t want to mix too many textures of the same design and style. Aim to use a combination of hard and soft textures and you?ll be golden. With this knowledge and your best judgment, you can transform a flat, uncharacterized room into one that?s beautifully textured.
